CFA / FTTH

ODN Networks (FTTH Fiber Optics)

Hands-on training to master the fundamentals of FTTH fiber optic networks, from FTTx/FTTH architecture and the ODN network through to the subscriber connection. It covers fiber preparation and splicing, connection at the SRO and PBO, splitters, tapping, testing with a visual fault locator, power meter and OTDR, as well as reading drawings and writing test reports.

ODN Networks (FTTH Fiber Optics)

Overview

This "FTTH optical fiber networks – ODN & subscriber installation" training provides an understanding of FTTx/FTTH architecture and the D1/D2/D3 segmentation of an access optical network. Participants learn to distinguish D1 transport from the NRO/POP to the PM/SRO, D2 distribution from the PM/SRO to the PBOs, and the D3 subscriber connection from the PBO to the PTO.

The training then develops the practical skills needed for cable preparation and optical fiber splicing. Participants carry out connection and tapping operations in closures, including fiber lifting, splicing, cassette placement and organization. The hands-on work also covers connections at the SRO and PBO boxes, as well as the placement and connection of splitters.

A significant part is devoted to testing and measurements on optical links. Participants use the optical pen, the power meter and the VIAVI SmartOTDR MTS 2000, carry out setup and testing, then learn to interpret reflective and non-reflective events on OTDR traces. The measured results are compared with the theoretical optical budget in compliance with standards, with test reports written up.

The training finally covers reading real optical fiber distribution and splitter connection plans. Training equipment includes connection and tapping closures, PBO boxes, a training SRO cabinet, splitters, Fujikura splicers and cleavers, a VIAVI SmartOTDR, a power meter, an optical pen, quick connectors and subscriber installation kits. A site visit may be arranged if possible, in the form of observation or supervised participation.

Objectives

Understand FTTx/FTTH architecture and the D1/D2/D3 segmentation of an access optical network.
Identify the scope of the D1, D2 and D3 segments.
Master the connection and tapping of optical fiber in closures, complying with standards and color codes.
Perform fusion splicing of optical fiber strands with different types of automatic or manual splicers.
Test an optical link using an optical pen, a power meter and an OTDR.
Theoretically calculate the optical budget.
Read and interpret an optical fiber network plan: distribution plan, connection plan, splitter diagram and D2/D3 routing.
Simulate a complete FTTH intervention, from the OLT to the ONT at the subscriber's premises, with tests and a report.
