Computer Networks Level 1 - Fundamentals of Passive and Active Infrastructure

Hands-on training to learn the basics of a local network and deploy a small passive and active infrastructure. It covers copper cabling, FTTx fiber optics, IP addressing, switches, a simple VLAN, Wi-Fi, DHCP, LAN/WAN and NAT concepts, as well as minimal network documentation.

Computer Networks Level 1 - Fundamentals of Passive and Active Infrastructure

Overview

This level 1 training introduces the components of a local network: workstations, switches, routers, gateways, Wi-Fi access points and IP addressing. It teaches how to gather a client's needs and translate them into cabling, capacity, coverage and scalability constraints.
Participants make RJ45 patch cords and outlets, perform patching and testing, then discover fiber types, connectors and loss measurements. They then configure the IP settings of a workstation and simple devices, commission a LAN and create a basic VLAN.
Hands-on practice includes an FTTx fiber link, a Wi-Fi access point, WAN access with DHCP and mini-documentation consisting of an IP plan, a diagram and outlet labeling. Equipment includes copper cables, testers, fiber equipment, switches, routers, access points and laptop PCs.

Objectives

• Understand the basic concepts of a local network and the role of workstations, switches, routers, gateways and Wi-Fi access points.
• Gather a client's needs and translate them into network constraints.
• Perform simple copper cabling with patch cords, RJ45 outlets, patching and testing.
• Understand the basics of optical fiber, connectors and loss measurement in dB.
• Configure basic IP settings on a workstation and simple devices.
• Commission a small local network with several IP devices.
• Set up a simple VLAN on a switch.
• Deploy a Wi-Fi access point with SSID and WPA2 or WPA3 security.
• Understand the roles of the router, firewall, NAT and DHCP in a simple network.
• Size and document a small, reliable network system.

Who should attend

• Entry-level CFA technicians and engineers.
• Electricians and installers.
• Recent graduates and technical students.
• Maintenance staff working on existing racks and networks.
