Practical guide to preparing an IP addressing plan

SSP Academy practical guide to preparing a clear, usable IP addressing plan before configuring a computer network. It helps identify equipment, organise usage, plan fixed IPs, DHCP, gateways, future reserves and the documentation needed to facilitate the network's deployment, maintenance and evolution.

Overview

Practical guide to preparing an IP addressing plan

An IP addressing plan should not be built as the installation progresses.

Before starting the configuration, it is best to identify the equipment, the services, the uses and the project's constraints in order to build a clear, sustainable network organisation.

This SSP Academy practical guide offers a simple approach:

Equipment → Services → Organisation → IP Plan → Documentation → Validation

You will find in particular the points to check for:

  • identify the project's equipment;
  • organise usage DATA, VoIP, Wi-Fi, CCTV and management ;
  • distinguish equipment requiring a fixed IP from those that can use DHCP ;
  • identify the gateways;
  • plan ranges for future growth;
  • document the addresses before deployment;
  • check the plan before starting the configuration.

A good IP plan is prepared before starting the configuration.

This document is a practical guide to help with preparation. It does not replace learning the calculation, segmentation and configuration methods taught in SSP Academy's Computer Networks training courses.
