Practical guide to sizing video surveillance storage
SSP Academy practical guide to sizing the storage of a video surveillance system based on the number of cameras, the bitrate, the cod…
Hands-on training to master the fundamentals of video surveillance: camera selection, HDCVI, XVR, storage, cabling, configuration, introduction to IP video and initial artificial intelligence functions.

This level 1 training course provides the essential technical basics for designing, installing, configuring and troubleshooting a small-scale video surveillance system.
The course covers camera selection based on resolution, focal length, viewing angle, DORI distance, lighting conditions and night vision, as well as the main image processing functions. Participants also learn to size the power supply, carry out coaxial cabling and BNC connections, select and configure an XVR, and then calculate the storage capacity required.
The training then introduces IP video surveillance: RJ45 cabling, IP addressing, PoE switch, IP camera and NVR/XVR. An introduction to artificial intelligence functions applied to video surveillance completes the course, including human/vehicle classification, intrusion detection and line crossing.
The teaching approach is hands-on, with exercises in assembly, equipment selection, configuration, storage calculation and diagnostics on professional equipment.
- Understand the fundamental principles of video surveillance and its regulatory framework
- Analyze a need and define the architecture of a small video surveillance system
- Read and interpret the technical specifications of a surveillance camera
- Choose a camera based on resolution, focal length, field of view, DORI distance and lighting conditions
- Size and check the power supply of cameras
- Carry out and check coaxial cabling, BNC connectors and power connections
- Read an XVR data sheet and select the recorder suited to the project
- Configure the main functions of an XVR: channels, recording, users, storage and network
- Calculate the storage capacity required based on resolution, FPS, codec and bitrate
- Carry out the installation and commissioning of a small-scale video surveillance system
- Understand the basics of IP video surveillance, network addressing and PoE
- Detect, address and connect an IP camera to an XVR/NVR
- Implement the first intelligent video analytics functions: human/vehicle, intrusion and line crossing
- Diagnose common faults in a video surveillance installation
- Produce minimal technical documentation for the installation
