Multimeter measurement on a low-voltage circuit
This SSP Academy practical guide helps the technician prepare and carry out the most common electrical measurements on a low-voltage electronic assembly.
It covers in particular:
- preparing the multimeter before any measurement;
- selecting the correct function;
- correctly connecting the leads;
- the principles of voltage measurement;
- essential safety rules;
- common mistakes that can cause an incorrect measurement or damage the assembly.
Before measuring
A reliable measurement starts with checking the multimeter, the leads and the terminals used.
The technician must in particular check:
- the condition of the housing and the display;
- the condition of the leads and the probe tips;
- connecting the black lead to COM ;
- positioning the red lead on the appropriate terminal;
- the function selected on the multimeter.
Professional habit: before each measurement, check function → terminal → connection.
The rest of the guide details the methods for measuring voltage, current, resistance and continuity, as well as the main checks to carry out in the field.
